Western Agri Financial, Inc. is pleased to bring the “Pryor Mountain Ranch” to the buying market! This authentic ranch is located in Bridger, Carbon County, and spans 3,794.82 contiguous acres (5.92 sections) in south central Montana. The ranch lies in the western shadows of the Pryor Mountains, named for Sergeant Nathaniel Pryor of the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery. Pryor and his detachment were camped on the north end of the Pryor Mountains, and during that fateful night the local Crow Indians stole all of his horses.

“The Great Spirit has put it exactly in the right place… When the summer heats scorch the prairies, you can draw up under the mountains, where the air is sweet and cool, the grass fresh, and bright streams come tumbling out of the snowbanks… In the autumn, when your horses are fat and strong from the mountain pastures, you can go into the plains and hunt the buffalo.”

His statement rings as true today, as it did in his day, and no wonder the Crows have fought for centuries to keep this land as their own!

This area is rich in western and ancient history, and a long record of human occupation. The famous “Absarokee” mountain range, just west of the “Pryor Mountain Ranch”, name was taken from the Crow Tribe, “Absa” meaning large beaked bird, and “Rokee” meaning children. The Pryor Mountains are considered more blessed than other mountain ranges, as they are a place to fast and receive visions. The mystical tribe of Little People’s… home is a cave near Arrow Rock just a couple miles east of “Pryor Mountain Ranch”. This cave is supposed to have supernatural powers for one who is able to withstand the little people’s abuse before they give you supernatural power! Another Indian name for the Pryor Mountains is “the land of the eagle” originated because of the “Thunderbird” mystery.

The ranch is quite diverse consisting of 643.16 acres of highly productive farmland and 3,151.60 acres of upland pastures. This ranch is well watered and has been used as a “stand-alone” ranch for livestock production.

The Pryor Mountains are famous for “Big Ice Cave”, the “Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range”, and an isolated portion of the Custer National Forest. The Big Ice Cave is located in the Custer National Forest, open to the public, and consists of pre-historic ice.

Pryor Mountain Ranch - Landcape Photo 05The world famous “Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range” was established in 1968 thanks to ranchers in the area wanting to preserve the wild horses that have been scientifically dated to Cortez Conquistadors. The Federal Government pushed to gather and sell the horses at auction, but local ranchers stood against the government and finally received authorization to establish the wild horse range to be administered by the BLM and Forest Service. Descendents of the horses are still free roaming and can be viewed today on the “Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range”!
